Acknowledge Your Sin to Overcome Guilt
1 John 1:8. Overcoming guilt starts with acknowledging our sin. From a Christian perspective, you have feelings of guilt when you have sinned against God. This sin, this disobedience, can be anything that you place above God. This could be sex outside of marriage, pride, love of money, lying, stealing, and so on. It is a terrible feeling to have guilt hanging over our head. The trouble with guilt is that you cannot hide from it, you cannot pretend that it is not there, and you definitely cannot hide your guilt from God. 1 John 1:8 says, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”
The first step to overcoming guilt is to acknowledge our sin before God. He already knows that we have done wrong. No one is perfect as God is perfect. God desires for us to acknowledge him by confessing our sins and trusting Him for our salvation. 1 John 1:9 goes on to say, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”. God has a salvation plan for all of us that confess our sins and accepts his Son, Jesus Christ, as our Lord and Savior. Once we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He takes on our guilt, our sin, and we are set free of guilt. This is the only way to truly overcome guilt.
