The Bible Tells Us to Try Every Spirit That Gives a Vision or Revelation
1 John 4:2. The Bible is very plain when it comes to giving us advice on determining the validity of visions and revelations. Not every prophet, proclaimer, sage, soothsayer, dream, vision, and so on are of God and are speaking the truth about the future. There is a simple test to determine if someone or a vision is of God or not. 1 John 4:1-2 says, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Herby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God”. Simply said - if the spirit that is inspiring you does not confess Jesus Christ, that spirit is not of God.
It is so easy to fool ourselves and chase after a vision or a prophet that makes us feel good. If we place our confidence in how well a spirit-inspired vision or prophecy makes us feel good, we will end up following false prophets and visions. The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ is the answer. We must try all spirits that give us visions, gives us hope, gives us purpose, and gives us confidence. If that spirit denies Jesus, His resurrection, and His offer of salvation, that spirit is not of God and is the antichrist.
