The Sleep Needs and False Comforts of the Spiritually Dead
Ephesians 5:14. Beware of sleep needs and remedies that are driven by the false comfort of material things or driven by the apathy of a meaningless existence. We may think we are fulfilling our sleep needs, but in reality our sleep can be just as corrupting as when we are awake living a sinful life. God did create us for the need for sleep, but sleep is a time for us to yield to God both physically and spiritually. It is a time for God to do a work in us and a time for us to listen to Him that He may spiritually and physically refresh us. Without God in our lives, we are spiritually dead both when we are awake and when we are asleep.
Ephesians 5:14 says, “Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.” Jesus came on this Earth to awaken us from being spiritually dead. Without God in our lives, we live for and sleep in the comfort of lies and deceptions. These are of the false comforts of material things as of the carnal man or the false comforts of apathy and purposelessness as of the sluggard. Without God, whether we be asleep or awake, we lead ourselves from being spiritual dead to eternal death and damnation where we ultimately separate ourselves from God forever.
