Leah's Labors: Will Having His Baby Make Him Fall in Love?
Genesis 29:32. All of us desire to be loved, but what should we do when the one that we love does not love us? Is there way to get someone to fall in love with us? To get a man to love them some women think a baby is the answer. This may cement a relationship, but will having a baby solve the root problem? Isn’t the real problem just low self-esteem? Desperate acts are not what is needed to deliver us from low self-esteem. When our self-esteem is low, God is who we need to turn to first as he always has love for us and answers to all of our problems.
Leah, Jacob’s wife, had a problem with self-esteem. She wanted her husband to fall in love with her, but he loved Rachel. She called her situation an affliction. Leah thought that by giving birth to a son that Jacob would love her. Well she gave birth to Reuben. Reuben means “behold a son”. Leah was certain that this baby would cure her affliction (Genesis 29:32 And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me). The baby did not change things. Her husband still did not love her and her low self-esteem continued. Her “affliction” was not going to go away until she started putting God first in her life.
