The Love of Money Corrupts Our Flesh and Our Purpose
James 5:5. Money, riches, and the “good life” can distract us from achieving what God would have us do. Without God in our lives, money corrupts. If we are not careful, money and what it will buy can corrupt our flesh as well as our purpose in life. We end up overeating, overindulging, and becoming obsessed with accumulating material goods that we become of no use to God. James 5:5 says, “Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter”. We eat, we drink, we are merry, and then we die. There is more to life than this.
God did not create us to corrupt our flesh and be indifferent to our purpose in life. God does desire for us to enjoy ourselves and for us to prosper, but not at his expense. He has given us material resources for us to use and enjoy for his purpose and glory. We are to be good stewards over material goods. We are not to overindulge, idolize riches, and be consumed in sensual pleasure as an end it itself. This is where we have lost our way and need to turn back to Jesus or suffer the consequences.
