Matthew 8:22. The spiritual dead do not understand Christ and do not follow Christ. The spiritual dead are in a sinful state at odds with God. Their sin has resulted in disobedience to God as well as separation from God. God by his nature cannot be in the presence of sin, and that is why a person in unrepentant sin is separated from God. They are spiritually dead. The spirit of God is not in them.
Jesus is the solution to overcoming spiritual death. In Matthew 8:22, Jesus said, “... Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead”. Jesus here was not talking about people who were physically dead burying a physically dead person. He was talking about the spiritual dead. He was telling us that by repenting of our sins and following him, we no longer needed to be spiritually dead. Our sins can be forgiven and we can reunite with God through Jesus Christ. We have God’s spirit in us. Those who follow Jesus are no longer spiritually dead paying the price for their sins. Jesus came on this earth to save us from spiritual death and to give us eternal life.
