About Freedom, Government, and God

Bible Summary. What about freedom, Government, and God? How are they related? It is a desire for all mankind to be free. God, our creator, has given us the freedom to choose. Though God has given us freedom to choose, He desires for us to choose the things of God and to submit to human Government. Many Governments treasure the things of God like freedom, goodness, truth, and joy as well as many of the Ten Commandments. Even though we as individuals have freedom of choice, God desires for us to submit to Government, both good and bad. This submission should never result in us having to sin against God as God will always show us a way to do what is right.

Today there are many governments that promote freedom. but they have forgotten God. If these governments continue to separate themselves from God, they will not stand for very long. This is what happened with the people that built the Tower of Babel. They had Government, they had freedom, but no God. For freedom and Government to work, they both need God. Has the United States Chosen To Forget God?

God, our Creator, did not sanction human Government to be separated from Him. Many nations to include the United States are all about freedom, but their laws historically are based on Judo-Christian beliefs. Is God still the cornerstone of our laws today? God gives all of us the freedom to choose to include nations, but there are consequences for our choices. Psalm 9:17 advises nations not to forget God.

Psalm 9:17, “The wicked shall return to Sheol, all the nations that forget God.”

God Tells Us To Submit To Government.

All of us are concerned about our freedom and rights, but we still need to submit to the power of the Government here on Earth. We may not always agree with our Government, but God has ordained Governments to have power and authority over its citizens. If we unlawfully resist a Government that we think is wrong, we are actually resisting God. Romans 13:1 advises us that all Governments and powers are ordained of God.

Romans 13:1, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.”

Christians and Human Government.

What should we do when it appears that our Government is at odds with Jesus’ teachings? We should speak out against wrongs, but we must remember first that we are servants of God. If we think that the Government is forcing us to sin, look to God as He will always offer us a way not to sin. 1st Peter 2:16 advises us not to use are freedom for evil, but as servants of God.

1st Peter 2:16, “Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.”

About Freedom and Government without God.

The people that built the Tower of Babel provide a great lesson of what is wrong with a free people and Government that is without God. With the Tower of Babel a free people came together under a democratic Government to build a great tower. Their purpose was fame and glory. Here they were creatures of God, but served their own purpose and were out at odds with God. God created mankind for His glory and purpose, not ours. Genesis 11:4 tells us of the Tower of Babel being build to the glory of man.

Genesis 11:4, “Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”
