Define Righteousness As A Characteristic of God and His Commandments.

God is the ultimate authority when it comes to what is right and wrong. Through his prophets, his commandments, and the Bible he has revealed his righteousness to mankind. Psalm 119:172 advises us that all of God’s commandments are righteous.

Psalm 119:172, “My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteous. More”

God’s Divine Nature Defines What is Righteous and What is Not.

God is the source of all good and truth in the world. He is right in all things. He is righteous. All righteousness comes from him. Psalm 33:5 advises us that God loves righteousness and the earth is full of his goodness.

Psalm 33:5, “He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.”

Define Righteousness As the Pursuit of Righteous Acts.

If we pursue actions and activities that line up with God, then this is a righteous way for a person to live their life. On the other hand, our righteous acts cannot make us righteous because we are not perfect in that it is in our nature to sin and fall short of the glory of God. Titus 3:5 advises us that we can do righteous things but it is only God’s mercy that puts us in right standing with God.

Titus 3:5, “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.”

Define Righteous As Right Standing With God Through Christ.

From a Christian perspective, righteousness is defined as being in right standing with God because of Christ‘s death on the cross. Without Christ no person can be in right standing with God. Righteous is not of works. Galatians 2:21 advises us that our righteous does not come from doing good works or knowing God’s commandments, but only from Jesus.

Galatians 2:21, “I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.”

Define Righteous As All Righteousness Comes From God.

A person can be defined as righteousness if they possess God’s character as all righteousness comes and is given from God. God is the ultimate authority of what is right and wrong. He has revealed his righteousness through his commandments, his prophets, and through Jesus Christ. 1st John 2:29 advises us that righteousness can only come from God through Jesus Christ.

1st John 2:29, “If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.”
