Examples of Values – Spiritual and Material Values

Bible Summary. The Bible provide many examples of values. From a Christian perspective, values can be broken into two classes, material values and spiritual values. Material values focus totally on things like sex, food, shelter, and love of money. Spiritual values focus on ideals such as truth, love, and righteousness. The Bible has many parables addressing material and spiritual values. The parable of the Rich Fool teaches us God's position on people valuing material things over the spiritual things of God. The parable of the Ten Virgins teaches us the importance of putting our spiritual beliefs and values into action. Just “talking the talk” will not fool God on what you really value in life. The parable of the Talents also teaches us to seek and act on our spiritual values. God will give increase to the diligent, but will take away from the slothful and uncommitted. See below for several examples of values from the Bible. Key Bible Verses: 1 Corinthians 2:14, Luke 12:20: Parable of the Rich Fool ..., Matthew 25:13: Parable of the Ten Virgins ... and Matthew 25:29: Parable of the Talents

Two Types of Values – Spiritual and Material.

Examples of material values include fleshly passions such as sex, food, shelter, sensual pleasures, love of money, and love of material things. Examples of spiritual values include ideals such as truth, love, righteousness, goodness, and so on. All of us choose either to value material things or spiritual things. Those that place the most value in material things do not understand spiritual things.

See Scripture Commentary: 1 Corinthians 2:14 explains the contrast of spiritual and material values.

The Parable of the Rich Fool – Valuing Material Things Over Spiritual Things.

The parable of the rich fool tells us that material values may be important to men, but spiritual values are what is important to God. In the parable of the rich fool, there is a difference of opinion between the rich fool and God in regard to the value a person should put into material things

See Scripture Commentary: Luke 12:20 gives us an example of values with the Parable of the Rich Fool.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins – Examples of Values in Action.

The parable of the Ten Virgins provides us an example of how important is for a Christian to be diligent in their faith. Christian diligence is where a Christian exercises their faith in a wise, consistent, and earnest effort. In the parable of the Ten Virgins, all ten virgins believed that the bridegroom was coming, but only five virgins truly exercised their faith to do everything possible to be prepared for the bridegroom's arrival

See Scripture Commentary: Matthew 25:13 gives us an example of values with the Parable of the Ten Virgins.

The Parable of the Talents – The Value of Acting on God's Truth.

The parable illustrates how the diligent who seek and act on God's truth will receive increase. On the other hand, the slothful who seek excuses will receive decrease.

See Scripture Commentary: Matthew 25:29 gives us an example of values with the Parable of the Talents.
