To Face Death, A Christian Perspective of Three Types of Death

Bible Summary. The Bible tells us how to face death. From God’s perspective it is not physical death that we should fear. Physical death is only the soul being separated from our physical body. There are really three types of death. Besides physical death, there are spiritual and eternal death. Spiritual death is separation from God because of our sin. God cannot be in the presence of sin (disobedience to God). Spiritual death started with Adam and continues today whenever we sin against God. Spiritual death is only a temporary condition, but eternal death is forever. Eternal death is eternal separation from God. If we have not accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we will face death that is eternal on Judgment Day. See below for more commentary and scriptures concerning facing death.

Face Death From God’s Perspective.

From a Christian perspective death is something we need to fully understand and discussed in order to face death from the right perspective. From God perspective it is not physical death that we should be fearful of facing. Physical death only kills the body and not the soul. It is spiritual and eternal death that causes deadly harm to our soul. Matthew 10:28 advises us to face death from a godly and spiritual perspective.

Matthew 10:28, “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

Face Death That Is Physical.

Physical death is the separation of the inner man from the body. Many of us are so focused on the physical death, but it is the soul that needs to be cared for first. We should not be scared of physical death. James 2:26 advises us that physical death is just the separation of man’s spirit from his physical body.

James 2:26, “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”

Face Death That Is Spiritual.

Spiritual death is separation from God because of our sin. From a Christian perspective this is a death experience that we face everyday. Mankind first suffered spiritual death when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden. Ephesians 2:1 advises us about spiritual death as a result of unrepentant sin in our lives.

Ephesians 2:1, “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;”

Face Death That Is Eternal.

Eternal death is eternal separation from God. If we have not accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we will face death that is eternal on Judgment Day. Eternal death happens because man chooses sin (disobedience to God), and thus, we choose to be separated from God. Separation from God first starts off as spiritual death, but it will eventually turn to eternal death. Revelation 21:8 advises us on the consequences of facing eternal death.

Revelations 21:8, “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
