Godliness – What It Is and What It Is Not

Summary. When Jesus walked on this Earth He revealed to us about the nature of God and His Godliness. Godliness is about truth and not about worldly knowledge. God may have blessed us with wealth, but that does not make us godly. The saying, “Cleanliness is next to godliness”, is not actually a quote from the Bible, but there are scriptures that back up the saying. The scriptures teach us that the cleanliness of our body is important, but not at the expense of acting out of the will of God. See below for Biblical advise and scriptures on godliness.

The Mystery of Godliness Made Clear in Jesus Christ.

When Jesus walked on this Earth He revealed to us about the nature of God and His Godliness. Jesus came to us as God, the Son, in human form and revealed to us the godliness of His loving and righteous nature. 1st Timothy 3:16 explains to us the mystery of godliness.

1st Timothy 3:16 “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”

Prosperity and Wisdom Does Not Equal Godliness.

Many of us to include Christians can caught up in worldly goods and worldly knowledge and think it is a form of Godliness. Godliness is about truth and not about worldly knowledge. God may have blessed us with wealth. We may give to the poor and pay tithes, but that does not make us godly. 1st Timothy 6:5 advises us of what godliness is not.

1st Timothy 6:5, “Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.”
