Jesus in Prophecy, His Crucifixion and Death Foretold

Bible Summary. There are many prophecies in the Old Testament that foretell the events of the Messiah’s crucifixion. These prophecies are then fulfilled by Jesus in the New Testament. Messianic prophecies concerning the events of Jesus’ crucifixion include Jesus being pierced through the hands and feet, men would gamble for Jesus’ clothes, he would be given vinegar and gall to drink, Jesus would be crucified with criminals, his bones were not to be broken, and Jesus would be killed. The Messiah Will Be Pierced Through Hands and Feet.

The Prophecy: Psalm 22:16 ”For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. ”;

The Prophecy Fulfilled: Luke 23:33, “And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.”.

Men Will Gamble For the Messiah’s Clothing.

The Prophecy: Psalm 22:18, ”They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.”;

The Prophecy Fulfilled: Matthew 27:35, “And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.”.

The Messiah Will Be Given Vinegar and Gall to Drink.

The Prophecy: Psalm 69:21, ”They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. “;

The Prophecy Fulfilled: Matthew 27:34, “They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.”.

The Messiah Will Be Crucified With Criminals.

The Prophecy: Isaiah 53:12, ”… because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.“;

The Prophecy Fulfilled: Matthew 27:38, “Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.”.

The Messiah’s Bones Will Not Be Broken.

The Prophecy: Psalm 22:17, ”I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.”;

The Prophecy Fulfilled: John 19:33,36, “But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: … For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled …”.

The Messiah Will Be Killed.

The Prophecy: Isaiah 53:7-9, ”… he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter … He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living … And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death …”;

The Prophecy Fulfilled: Matthew 27:50, “Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.”.
