Jesus in Prophecy, His Messianic Ministry Foretold

Bible Summary. There are many prophecies in the Old Testament that foretell the nature and characteristics of the Messiah’s ministry prior to his arrest and crucifixion. These prophecies are then fulfilled by Jesus in the New Testament. Messianic prophecies concerning Jesus ministry include Jesus healing the blind and deaf, Jesus being hated without cause, people not believing he being the Messiah, Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey, and Jesus entering the Temple with authority. See below for scriptures concerning Jesus in prophecy in regard to his ministry prior to his arrest and crucifixion.

The Messiah Will Make the Blind See, the Deaf Hear.

The Prophecy: Isaiah 35:5-6, ”Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: ...”;

The Prophecy Fulfilled: Matthew 11:5, “The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them” (Matthew 11), John 11:47.

The Messiah Will Be Hated Without a Cause.

The Prophecy: Psalm 35:19, ”Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.”;

The Prophecy Fulfilled: John 15:23-25, “He that hateth me hateth my Father ... and hated both me and my Father … the word might be fulfilled” (John 15).

People Will Hear and Not Believe the Messiah (the Arm of the Lord)

The Prophecy: Isaiah 53:1, ”Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?” (Isaiah 53);

The Prophecy Fulfilled: John 12:37-38, “... yet they believed not on him: That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled ...” (John 12).

The Messiah Will Enter Jerusalem Riding a Donkey.

The Prophecy: Zechariah 9:9, ”Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. ”;

The Prophecy Fulfilled: Matthew 21:1-11, “... And brought the ass, and the colt … And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way....” (Matthew 21).

The Messiah Will Enter the Temple With Authority.

The Prophecy: Malachi 3:1, ”... and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. ”;

The Prophecy Fulfilled: Matthew 21:12, “And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,” (Matthew 21), Luke 19:45.
