What Is His Name?

After the 3rd century BC, the Jews ceased using the name Yahweh for two reasons. In the Greco-Roman world the Jews started to use the name elohim, meaning “god”. Additionally, the divine name of Yahweh increasingly became regarded as too sacred to be uttered, and the use of the name ”Lord” came into common use among Jews and Christians.

The Old Testament provides us with the many names of our God Jehovah. These are compound names that each describe a characteristic of God. God in himself is too awesome for us to describe in his entirety. Each of these compound names of God that begin with the name ”Jehovah” help us to understand a specific aspect of God’s character.
