From a Christian perspective there is only one way to happiness and that is through Jesus Christ. Jesus is the only way for us to be reconciled back to God and to have true joy. With happiness we are all like the prodigal son where we will try many ways to reach happiness. For us who are Christians, at some point we will realize that we need salvation and that we need to establish a relationship with our Father, our God. Being in right relationship with God is a great joy for everyone to include the person being saved, fellow Christians, and God ( Luke 15:24, “For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry”).

Having hope is a wondrous thing that is a necessity on your way to happiness. Without hope most things cannot be accomplished. Hope gives you energy and motivation to reach your goal. If you had no hope that you will be paid on your job, would you even go to work? For someone living the Christian life it is the same. If you do not believe you will go to Heaven you will lack the power of the Holy Ghost to get to Heaven. It is hope and faith in Jesus Christ that keeps the Holy Spirit in our lives. God’s spirit enables us to live a Christian life in the hope and joy of knowing that eternal life awaits us in Heaven (Romans 15:13, “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost”).

The only way to happiness is through following Jesus Christ. One of the reasons that Jesus came on this Earth was to show us how to live in righteousness. When we are found in Jesus Christ, our next step is to live like him. Living like Him includes both in His suffering and His joy. The suffering is a good suffering much like an athlete preparing for a sporting event. The athlete goes through much pain as well as joy in preparing for the sporting event, but the greatest joy is in winning the sporting event. This is why we can rejoice in suffering like Christ did on this Earth knowing our eternal reward. Jesus is the true and only way to happiness (1Peter 4:13, “But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy”).
