From the four Gospel accounts of the crucifixion, Jesus made seven statements while he was on the cross. Three of these sayings come exclusively from the Gospel of Luke and three of the other sayings come exclusively from the Gospel of John. The other saying appears both in the Gospel of Mark and Matthew. Many of these statements of Jesus are also referenced in Old Testament scriptures showing the direct linkage between the Old Testament and the ministry of Jesus Christ.
These seven sayings chronologically document distinct emotions of Jesus while he was on the cross. The emotions that Jesus felt included forgiveness, salvation, relationship, abandonment, distress, triumph and reunion. The sayings of what Jesus said on the cross are widely preached and celebrated on Good Friday by many Christian denominations. See below the Bible list of scriptures of what Jesus said on the cross.
