Bible Summary. The Bible tells us that a hardened heart causes us to be unhappy. Unhappiness and a hardened heart can be caused by many reasons. If we hardened our hearts against God to please man, we will be unhappy. God is the only true source of joy in people’s lives, not man. Not knowing Christ leads to an unhappy lifestyle that negatively affects both our mind and body. Many of us are unhappy because we hardened our heart against God and do not put Him first in our lives. Denying and hardening our heart against God can bring great unhappiness because we are denying our purpose and reason for living. See below for Biblical commentary and scriptures concerning why people are unhappy.
Why Am I Unhappy?
Happiness Versus a Hardened Heart
C.S. Lewis puts it so well in that we to often focus on short-term gratifications and harden our hearts toward God who offers us infinite joy. C.S. Lewis’ quote below tells us of our poor choices concerning happiness and being half-hearted toward God.
“Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition, when infinite joy is offered to us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in the slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.” – C.S. Lewis
Why Am I Unhappy – You Are Trying to Please Others Rather Than God.
For some people, the source of why they are unhappy is that they are too busy trying to please man and have hardened their heart toward God. God is the only true source of joy in people’s lives, not man. Ephesians 6:6 advises us to be servants of Christ rather than pleasers of men.
Ephesians 6:6, “Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;”
Why Am I Unhappy – You Do Not Know Christ.
The Bible tells us that someone that is dull, listless, and looking inward on everything is far from God. It is this type of unhappy lifestyle that has hardened its heart toward God and adversely affects both the mind and body. Matthew 13:15 advises us how an ungodly lifestyle dulls the senses, dampens the spirit and can affect your health.
Matthew 13:15, “For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.”
Why Am I Unhappy – You Do Not Put God First.
Many of us ask the question of why am I unhappy. We look at all the circumstances of our lives to find the answer, but we find no answers. The real reason that many of us are unhappy is because we do not put God first in our lives. We have hardened our heart toward God. Proverbs 28:14 advises us that a loving, respectful relationship with God is the way to be happy in life.
Proverbs 28:14, “Happy is the man that feareth always; but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.”
Why Am I Unhappy – You Deny Your Purpose and the Reality of God.
Denying and hardening your heart toward God can bring great unhappiness because you are denying your purpose and reason for living. Being in denial of God is a futile act that brings no satisfaction. Proverbs 24:12 advises us on the dangers of denying God.
Proverbs 24:12, “If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth the soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?”
