Why Should We Fear God?

Fear God Because it is Our Duty to Do So.

Some people fear and worship God. Others either do not acknowledge God, or ask why they should fear God. The Bible tells us that it is our “whole” duty to fear God. In Ecclesiastes 12:13 Solomon advises us that it is our duty to fear God and keep his commandments.

Ecclesiastes 12:13, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”

Fear God Because He is a Great Mystery.

God is the source of all knowledge and truth. What mankind knows is what God has revealed to them. All other knowledge and truth is a great mystery. Fear God because he is a great mystery who you cannot control or anticipate what he will do next. Proverbs 24:21 advises us to fear God and kings because as they are powerful and we have no control what they will do next.

“Proverbs 24:21, “My son, fear thou the Lord and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change:”

Fear God Because He is Most Powerful.

One reason to fear God is that He is the most powerful person as well as most powerful force in the universe. As the all-powerful God of our creation, God is to be feared and revered. 2nd Kings 17:36 advises us of the power of God and who we should fear, worship, and do sacrifice.

2nd Kings 17:36, “But the Lord, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice.”

Fear God In Order To Increase Your Relationship with Him and Turn Away From Your Sin.

Fear of God is a good emotion, and it is something that should not cause us to run from God. You cannot run or hide from God. Being in fear of God is our acknowledgment that he is an awesome, most powerful God. That he is our first love. Exodus 20:20 advises us to fear God for his chastisement to keep us from the deadly effects of sin.

Exodus 20:20, “And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.”
